Choose an activity you would enjoy anyway

When you want to make friends in Calgary, a useful starting point is an activity you would still enjoy if the first conversation were brief. Pick one interest, one realistic travel distance and one time you can repeat. That turns a broad search into a decision you can act on.

Meetup’s Calgary listings can help you discover interest groups. Calgary Public Library also publishes events and programmes across the city. Look at the individual listing for its intended audience, location, price and booking requirements; do not assume every activity is a free drop-in.

Look near home when you want familiar faces

A cross-city event can be worth the journey, but an activity close to home may be easier to repeat. Use the Federation of Calgary Communities directory to find a local association, then check its own website for activities and membership rules.

Our Mahogany and SECA guides are starting points if you live in those areas. Elsewhere, try searching your neighbourhood name with “community association”, “volunteer” or the activity you enjoy. Open the organiser’s current page rather than relying on an old event listing.

Make the first visit easier

Send a short question before you go: “I’m new to the group and coming on my own. Is there someone I should look for when I arrive?” Confirm the meeting point and what to bring. You can set a modest goal, such as introducing yourself to two people or learning when the next session happens.

A shared activity supplies an easy opening: ask how someone got started, what they enjoy about the group or whether they have attended before. There is no need to turn every conversation into a friendship on the spot.

Give a good first meeting a next step

If you enjoyed the activity, return. If you enjoyed a conversation, suggest something specific: “I’m planning to come next Thursday. Will you be there?” Let the other person choose how much contact to share and leave room for a comfortable no.

For a low-pressure two-week plan, choose one recurring activity this week and attend it. In the following week, return to the same group or try one other option if it did not feel right. Keep the plan small enough to fit your actual life.

Where HeyNeibo fits

HeyNeibo is being built to support neighbourhood conversations and local plans in Calgary. It is not yet a live way to message residents or join events. You can use the existing resources above now and join our free waitlist if you would like a launch invitation when access opens.
