One alternative may not cover every need
Nextdoor’s Canadian site describes a neighbourhood network for local connections, information and businesses. If you are looking for an alternative in Calgary, first decide what you want to do: meet people, give something away, find an event or follow a neighbourhood announcement.
The options below serve different purposes. This is an editorial comparison of their published functions, checked on October 26, 2026, rather than a ranking based on user counts, private groups or measured performance. Local activity, availability and participation rules need to be checked directly.
Choose around the outcome you want
For meeting people, compare the next suitable activity and how easy it would be to return. For giving away an item, look for clear local participation and collection rules. For a facility closure or association announcement, start with the organisation responsible for it.
A smaller group near home may fit a practical request, while an interest group across the city may suit a hobby. You can use more than one resource. There is no reason to move all your neighbourhood activity to a single service if separate tools meet your needs.
What to check before joining a group
Read the group’s rules and recent public information, where available. Check whether it covers your area, whether posts need approval, how an organiser can be contacted and what personal details are requested. For an event, verify the actual organiser and booking process on the source page.
Buy Nothing’s own help centre explains ways to join through its app or local Facebook groups. That does not establish that a particular Calgary group is open or active today; check the group you intend to use. Our comparison does not endorse any individual listing or participant.
Is HeyNeibo available as a Nextdoor alternative?
Not yet as a resident community. HeyNeibo is developing neighbourhood conversations, local plans and useful exchanges for Calgary. The public site currently offers guides, sourced local news and a free launch waitlist. Messaging, resident posting and marketplace transactions are not available here today.
There is no confirmed launch date. Joining the waitlist requires an email and consent to receive a launch invitation; your neighbourhood is optional. It does not create an account or guarantee beta access.
